After the unprecedented COVID-19 hit the earth, online job interviews have become the “new normal” in recruitment. Online job interviews offer employers the logistical convenience of meeting with potential candidates and indirectly assessing their technological competence.
1. Computer Competency and Testing
Check that your audio and visual settings are working correctly before the online interview. As the online interview could take between 30 minutes to an hour, the interviewee needs to ensure that their internet connectivity is stable. Be familiar with the different meeting platforms such as Zoom, MS Team, Google Meet, Skype, etc. Additionally, if family members are sharing wi-fi at home, do inform and seek understanding from them to avoid streaming video or engaging in high-bandwidth activity during this period to prevent any interruptive loss of internet connection during the online interview.
2. Virtual Backgrounds and Lighting
Another important consideration is the presentation of your visual background, be it virtual or real-time physical background. This is to avoid presenting the wrong impression of your professionalism to the hiring manager. If it helps, you might attempt rearranging the backdrop of your house for a more attractive appearance. It can be a turn off if poor lighting causes your screen to be dark, making it difficult for the interviewers to see your facial features. If the interview session is conducted during the day, try to sit near a window that allows natural light and adjust the overhead lights to evade the glare.
3. Eliminate Distractions
It is courteous to turn off any distractions from your mobile devices before the interview begins. This is basic courtesy because the recruiting managers have set aside time to examine your suitability for the position. Removing distractions will also help you to give them your whole attention to the job interview.
4. Log in Early and Do a Quick Check
It is good to log in 15 minutes early for the virtual interview. Checking your computer system ahead of time to make sure that it is working properly will put your mind at ease and help you stay calm.
5. Be Professional and Be Composed
The first impression matters. Although the interview is conducted online, dressing in the appropriate attire matching the job role will certainly pose a better impression to the recruiting organisations. Remember to take occasional pauses and speak intentionally. You might like to work on the relevant talking points and beef up your elevator pitch.
